Alice Marie Carrington Hannahs died in Billings, Montana, on Sunday, July 28. Alice was born on Oct. 4, 1933, in Red Lodge, Montana, the daughter of James and Beth (Leeman) Carrington.
She grew up nearby in Belfry, where she graduated high school. She pursued a nursing degree at Billings Deaconess/Montana State College and became an RN in 1954.
While working the 3 to 11 shift at Deaconess Hospital in 1954, Alice met the Rev. John Hannahs, who was visiting a parishioner, and six months later they were married. They moved to Wyoming in 1955, where their children, David and Leah, were born. Karen came along during a brief diversion to Florida.
Alice had a long and varied career as a nurse in several towns in Wyoming. In 1970, she received a BSN with honors at MSU, Bozeman, Montana, and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. She received an MS in Psychosocial Nursing and Gerontology at University of Utah in 1982.
In 1988, she was presented with the Norman S. Holt award for nursing excellence by the Wyoming Hospital Association. She was Director of Nursing at Wyoming State Hospital and retired in 1989.
Alice was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Wyoming Nurses Association and the League of Women Voters. She served on numerous boards and enjoyed volunteering at Wyoming State Training School in Lander, Clark Elementary School in Evanston, and DonorConnect in Salt Lake City.
