EVANSTON — Lyman resident Skylar Gray, 36, has been charged with first-degree murder for the Aug. 31 shooting death of Jeremy Jaques, 48, of Mountain View. The shooting took place in Fort Bridger during Labor Day weekend’s popular Fort Bridger Rendezvous, which was put on high alert for a short period of time until the location of the shooting was confirmed.

Gray’s partner, Shadawn Oehler, 34, was also arrested and charged with a felony count of accessory after the fact.

The Uinta County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired at a private residence across the highway from the post office at approximately 5:48 p.m.  Deputies arrived just after emergency medical service (EMS) crews.

An affidavit filed Sept. 3 states, “After securing the scene, the ambulance stopped life saving measures. Jaques had no signs of life.”

An eyewitness further stated, according to the affidavit, that “Gray parked in front of a shop on the property, exited the driver’s door of the truck and began yelling at Jaques about owing him. Jaques substantially stated he did not ‘f------ owe you a thing’ ... When Gray was approximately 10 feet away from Jaques, Gray pulled a black colored pistol and began firing at Jaques ... Jaques fell to the ground. Gray continued shooting while Jaques was on the ground,” reportedly four more times.

The witness also told law enforcement that Gray was not alone during the incident. A woman, presumably Oehler, and children were present in the vehicle during the alleged shooting.

According to Oehler’s affidavit, “they had stopped at a residence in Fort Bridger so Skylar could talk to Jeremy ... that she then heard a gun [shot], so she got back in the truck to protect her kids that were in the truck... As they were driving away from the residence, Skylar told her to throw the gun out the window.”

Oehler admitted she had discarded the firearm near Micheli Ranch Road, court documents state.

A .45 caliber handgun was recovered off Business Loop 80 near the crime scene. According to an affidavit in Gray’s case, 10 spent .45 shell casings were recovered under and around Jaques’ body.

The charge of first-degree murder implies premeditated malice and intent. If convicted, Gray could face the death penalty or life imprisonment with or without the possibility of parole in addition to a variety of fines.

Uinta County Attorney Loretta Howieson Kallas told the Herald she has not determined whether her office will seek the death penalty should Gray be convicted. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Uinta County Circuit Court.

Oehler faces up to three years of imprisonment and/or up to $3,000 in fines if convicted. She is scheduled to appear in the same court a day after Gray. A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.
