John Allen Proffit passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, in Kingman, Arizona. He was born in Ogden, Utah, to Beryl Chattin and Howard Benjamin Proffit on April 24, 1937.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delores “Eileen” (Haas); brother, Jerry, of Chicago; four sons: Gregory Max (Sheri), of Park City, Utah; John Stuart (Laura), of Denver, Colorado; Christopher Howard (Kristin), of Kingman, Arizona; and Peter Joel (Brandee), of Kingman, Arizona; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was raised in Urie, and attended primary and secondary schools in Lyman, graduating from high school in 1955. He attended the University of Wyoming on a scholarship, receiving a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1959.

John worked as a civil engineer in California, Utah and Cheyenne, where he met and married Eileen, and received his certification as a professional civil engineer. He worked as a private consulting engineer in Evanston, Wyoming and Colorado before coming back to Evanston in 1974 as a partner in Uinta Engineering and Surveying Inc.

He won the Wyoming Small Businessman of the year award in 1984. John came to the Kingman area in 1987 in an attempt to expand the services of Uinta Engineering, and was the founder of Mohave Engineering Associates, which was incorporated in 1989.

He became the sole owner of Mohave Engineering in 1993, which grew with the Kingman growth to a moderate-sized firm of about 30 employees. The firm was sold to his son, Peter, in 1998.

John was a big fan of happy hour, and loved to enjoy a cold beer with family and friends.

Funeral service for John Proffit will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Kingman Presbyterian Church: 2425 Detroit Ave. in Kingman, Arizona. A reception will follow at the church.
