FARMINGTON, Utah — The EHS track and field teams enjoyed another successful meet across state lines last week, with the Lady Devils placing fourth and the Red Devils finishing fifth at the Farmington Super Meet in Farmington, Utah.

The two-day event featured over 1,100 athletes representing 19 different schools, making it one of the larger events the EHS teams will compete in this season. With spring-like weather both days, head coach Roy Barker’s teams took full advantage, turning in some outstanding early-season performances.

“I really couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Barker said. “The kids performed at a high level, and competed very well. We had some kids that prequalified both days. I’m just very pleased with the athletes’ excitement to get going and compete.”

This week is a busy one for the EHS track and field teams, with the JV team headed to Lyman Tuesday, and the varsity headed back across the border for the Alpha Invitational in Timpanogos, Utah, with preliminaries scheduled for Wednesday and the finals scheduled for Thursday.

“The pole vault event was actually Monday,” Barker said. “Then all the young kids were in Lyman Tuesday, weather permitting. All the older kids will be in Timpanogos Wednesday and Thursday. It’s supposed to be cold, maybe a little damp – we’ll see what happens. But it will be chilly, no matter where we’re going.”

Lady Devils

“The girls’ team took fourth – it’s been a while since the girls have placed that high in a meet of that caliber, so it was great to see,” Barker said.

The Lady Devils were led by Talia Conrad – who won the 100 meter dash, with a time of 12.69 – and Jocelyn Capener, who was tops in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 2:21.54. Capener also finished second in the 1600 meters (5:29.20), while Conrad was third in the long jump (16 feet, 5.25 inches) and sixth in the 400 meters (1:02.45).

“Jocelyn had a great day – she prequalified in the 800, and was second in the mile,” Barker said. “Talia winning the 100 meters and placing in the 400 was fantastic.”

Alyssa Brown had another great day in the throwing events, placing second in the shot put (35 feet, 8 inches) and 16th in the discus (90 feet, 3.5 inches).

In the field events, Emma Lonsway placed third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 9 feet; Lonsway also got it done in the hurdle events, placing sixth in the 300 hurdles (48.77), and 12th in the 100 hurdles (17.52). Cassie Barker finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch; Kiara Worthing was fifth in the long jump, with a distance of 15 feet, 7 inches.

“We had a lot of girls scoring points,” Barker said. “Emma Lonsway was scoring points, Cassie [Barker] scored points in the high jump. The throwers – Alyssa Brown scored points in the shot put and keeps getting better in the disc. Greatest performances all around, I couldn’t be happier for those girls.”

In relay events, the 4x400 team of Emma Lonsway, Jocelyn Capener, Hallie Prete and Talia Conrad placed second (4:16.79), while the team of Jasmine Tapia, Marley Renelle, Eliza Day and Liesl Botts placed fourth in the 4x800 (10:55.67). The 4x100 team finished sixth, with a time of 53.22.

Other notable performances included Kiara Worthing in the 100 hurdles (8th, 17.18), Hallie Prete in the 1600 meters (9th, 5:44.88), Celeste Swensen in the long jump (9th, 15 feet, 3 inches) and Braelynn Morrison in the pole vault (9th, 7 feet).

Red Devils

“We took fifth with the boys – we just missed fourth, I think by just a couple of points,” Barker said. “But for the combined total points – boys and girls – we took fourth overall. And the teams that beat us, these are schools with 2,500 kids – big, big schools that we’re competing really well against.”

The Red Devils were led by a pair of second-place finishes from Kai Barker, who finished runner-up in the high jump – clearing a height of 6 feet, 3 inches – and the 110 hurdles, with a time of 15.25. The senior also finished 8th in the 300 hurdles, with a time of 42.74.

Fellow senior Gabe Hutchinson also had a productive day on the track – his time of 10.97 in the 100 meter dash was good enough for third place; the speedy senior also finished third in the 400 meters, with a time of 49.65.

Ayden Hartzell was strong in sprints, as well, placing fifth in the 400 meters (51.33) and 13th in the 100 meters (11.40). Jamar McDowell placed eighth in the 1600 meters, with a time of 4:45.18.

In the pole vault, the Red Devils placed four in the Top 10, led by Cameron Hiatt, who cleared a height of 12 feet, 4 inches to finish fourth. Treyton Weidrich followed in seventh place with a height of 11 feet, 4 inches; Brayden Wallace (11’4”) and Raife Weidrich (9’10”) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Wallace finished fourth in the long jump, with a distance of 19 feet, 9 inches.

“Obviously, Gabe and Kai scored a lot of points for us,” Barker said. “But what I really was impressed with were the guys like Brayden Wallace, scoring points in the long jump and pole vault. The guys in the pole vault did a really nice job scoring points – Cam Hiatt and Treyton Weidrich. A couple of our distance runners ran well. Just a lot of good things happening.”

The 4x400 relay team of Jayden Rieker, Aidan Conrad, Ayden Hartzell and Gabe Hutchinson won the event with a time of 3:26.48, while the 4x800 team of Aidan Conrad, Jamar McDowell, Justin Moon and Dallin Horrocks finished fourth (8:49.23). The 4x100 team of Jayden Rieker, Brandon Blackwell, Brayden Wallace and Nathan Ungerman finished eighth (46.54).

“We’re just throwing relay teams together, and they’re coming out and performing,” Barker said. “We threw that 4x400 team together out of nowhere, and they ran what I think is the third-fastest time in school history. I’m just really pleased with how the kids are competing.”
