Red Devil wrestling to battle at regionals in Rock Springs

Posted

EVANSTON — Red Devil wrestling will battle for placings and seedings at this weekend’s 4A West Conference regional tournament in Rock Springs in advance of next weekend’s season-ending state tournament at the Casper Events Center. The 4A West Conference field is made up of Green River, Kelly Walsh, Rock Springs, Natrona County, Evanston and Jackson, in the order of finish from last year’s regional tournament.

The Red Devils will look to improve upon their fifth-place finish at last season’s 4A West regional tournament and eighth-place at state standing.

Cheyenne East is the defending state champion and the Thunderbirds are ranked third in the most recent rankings from WyoWrestling.com, which still shows the Kelly Walsh Trojans, last season’s state runner-up, as the team to beat. The Green River Wolves are second, with the Thunder Basin Bolts, Sheridan Broncs and Rock Springs Tigers rounding out the top-six teams, in the eyes of the online publication specializing in wrestling for the Cowboy State. Sheridan has come on strong in the latter part of the season to claim a spot in the top-six, knocking the Natrona County Mustangs out.

The following Red Devils are included in the individual top-seven rankings for week eight: Logan Elsen — fifth at 120 pounds; Isaac Saavedra — fifth at 126 pounds; Kendall Cummings — sixth at 132 pounds; Rigden Wagstaff — sixth at 160 pounds; Rylie Griggs — sixth at 170 pounds; Clay Lester — seventh at 182 pounds and Pablo Escalante is third at 195 pounds. Escalante was the only Red Devil to be ranked as the top wrestler in his weight class at one point during the season, and outside of 152-pound state champion Saige Synan, was the top placer for the Red Devils last season, placing fourth at 182 pounds. Synan suffered a serious neck injury during a camp this past summer and was unable to compete for EHS this season.

The regional brackets display eight pairings for sixteen wrestlers, as do the state brackets, though the regional pairings will have some first-round byes not nearly as common for the state pairings next week in Casper.

Red Devil wrestling is guided by longtime head coach Larry Wagstaff, who is assisted by Todd Nixon, Garth Wagstaff and Steve Moore. Managers for this year’s team are Payton Woodward and Abby Rusch.
