Buffalos take fourth, Lyman seventh at Braves Time Trial

AFTON – The Mountain View High School boys cross country team is hoping to build off of last year’s third-place finish at the Class 3A state cross country meet.

The Buffalos know a championship trophy will be hard to come by with Star Valley looking to defend its fifth-straight title this season.

But they hope to give the Braves a run for their money.

“We’ll see what happens, but we’re looking at being competitive at state,” Mountain View coach Jim Dolezal said. “That’s our goal.”

Mountain View got a chance to face its top competition on Thursday at the Braves Time Trial at Star Valley View Golf Course.

The Braves swept the top-five spots to finish with 15 points at their home course, while Jackson was second with 73, Deer River was third with 76 and Mountain View was fourth with 90.

“I thought overall the whole team did really well,” Dolezal said. “I’ve got a great group of kids. They’ve been working really hard. We’re almost there. We had some kids sick. Hopefully, when we come in with regionals, and especially state, we’re going to be 100 percent.”

Travis Harmon led the way for Mountain View in the 1.8-mile race with a sixth-place finish in 9:53.36.

The sophomore just missed finishing in the top five.

“I felt pretty good,” Harmon said. “I got passed at the end though, so I’m sort of mad about that.”

Trenton Wells (15th, 10:30), Justin Hamblin (17th, 10:36.70), Gabe Gardiner (25th, 11:01) and Swade Bindl (32nd, 11:12) rounded out Mountain View’s top-five runners on the day.

Lyman finished seventh at the event with 190 points.

“We looked at this as a speed day,” Eagles coach Kevin Lueck said. “We’ve been going heavy this week, so we told the kids to try to run comfortable. It allows us to get out of the Valley for a day and run on a different terrain.”

Tyler Rasmussen, a senior, finished 33rd in 11:25 to lead Lyman. Jeese Fanos (45th, 11:42), Michael Kunzler (46th, 11:45), Jacob Palmer (50th, 11:53) and Stone Olquin (64th, 12:15) were the Eagles’ top-five runners.

“We’ve improved so much in the last few years,” Rasmussen said. “As a team going forward, I think our biggest goal right now is to keep showing improvement and keep competing against all these teams and working our way up the ladder a little bit.”
