Mountain View football hitting its stride

Posted

MOUNTAIN VIEW — At the beginning of the season, Mountain View High School knew it had the potential to be a solid football team.

Buffalos coach Brent Walk believes his team is just starting to hit its stride. But he also believes Mountain View still has some areas to improve on.

“I still don’t think we’re where we need to be, and the kids buy into that,” Walk said. “They want to work and they want to get after it.”

Mountain View became the 2A West Conference champions on Friday after rolling to a 41-0 win against Kemmerer. Now, the road to the state playoffs goes through Mountain View.

The Buffalos (6-1, 5-0) will receive the top seed and will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

“We’re pretty excited about that,” Walk said.

The Buffalos close out the regular season on Friday at Greybull.

Mountain View suffered an 18-0 loss to Cokeville, the top ranked team in Class 1A, in Week 1 and claimed a 22-21 win over Big Piney, ranked third in Class 2 A) during Week 2.

Just as Mountain View has done all season, the Buffalos are not taking any team for granted. In their last five games, the Buffalos have outscored opponents 193-6.

“I’ve been watching film on Greybull all weekend,” Walk said. “They are a very good football team. We spend a huge amount of time with the kids talking about getting better and better.”

Against Kemmerer, Mountain View scored on its first six possessions and held a 41-0 lead with 6:45 to play in the third quarter.

Briggin Bluemel scored two rushing touchdowns. Kimball Madsen ran for two touchdowns and connected with Jake Parkinsons for a touchdown through the air. Braeden Walk also threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harlan Benedict.

Trevon Peterson, Caden Stall and Braeden Walk had interceptions for Mountain View.

Madsen, who started at quarterback and played for the first two quarters, was 10 of 14 through the air for 149 yards. He also ran for 135 yards on nine carries.

Bluemel finished with 152 yards rushing on 13 carries to help lead the Mountain View offense, which finished with 452 yards.

“We broke our film down (Sunday) morning, and a great deal of credit goes to that offensive line,” Walk said. “There were plays where our offensive line was absolutely perfect.”

Defensively, the Buffalos limited Kemmerer to 106 yards on offense and five first downs.

Senior defensive end JD Anderson finished with 26 defensive points to lead Mountain View on defense.

“I think it was the best game of his career,” Walk said. “He had a phenomenal game. He was really, really good for us.”

Colby Reese finished with 21 defensive points while Bluemel added 16.

“We like our defensive schemes and we like our offensive schemes,” Walk said. “We’re just out there playing Mountain View football.”

Now, the Buffalos are focused on Greybull (4-3, 3-2), which is coming off a 36-8 win against Lyman on Saturday.

Mountain View will take the week to prepare for Greybull before looking toward its goals for the postseason.

The ultimate goal would be a state title.

“At the beginning of the year, we knew we had the potential to be really, really good,” Walk said. “I think we’re starting to hit our stride at the perfect time.”
