RAWLINS — Evanston High School boys’ swimming coach Jim Levine said he was pleasantly surprised with the way his team opened the 2017-18 campaign this weekend in Rawlins. 

On Friday, Rawlins, Evanston and Lyman competed against each other in a dual meet. Rawlins claimed a 150-106 win over Lyman and a 153-127 win over Evanston. The Red Devils earned a 128-116 win against Lyman.

On Saturday, seven teams participated in a pentathlon. Lander won the meet with 177 points, while Lyman was second with 101 and Rawlins was third with 87. Evanston finished sixth with 46 points. 

“It was better than I expected,” Levine said. “It was a pleasant surprise. We had some competitors.”

Evanston senior Dylan Phillips led the way for the Red Devils by qualifying for state in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.97. Phillips, a two-time state qualifier, also won the 200-yard freestyle on Friday.

On Friday, Colter Camphouse took first in the 100-yard backstroke, Caleb Richins was second in the 100-yard butterfly and Ben Cook was third in the 100-yard breaststroke to help pace Evanston. 

The Red Devils’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Camphouse, Richins, Phillips and Reed Robinson were also victorious. 

“We had many personal-best times,” Levine said. “This early in the year to be close to those, and hitting those times, it was a pleasant surprise. It’s a bright future. We’ve got a long way to go. But if we keep hitting personal-best times, that’s the name of the game.”

It should also be a bright future for Lyman.

Between the two meets, the Eagles had seven out of eight swimmers qualify for the Class 3A state meet. 

Cooper Haycock made the cut in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle. He also qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. 

Stone Olguin was a qualifier in the 50-, 100-, and 500-yard freestyle. Olguin also made the state cut in the 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, along with the 200-yard IM.

Carson Walker qualified in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, along with the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. He also made the cut in the 200 IM.

Hansen Bradshaw will compete at state in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, along with the 100-yard butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke. 

Kyler Legault qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Carter Huntsman and Wynn Officier will swim the 100-yard backstroke at state.
