Lady Red Devils looking to future after loss

EVASTON — The Evanston High School volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to Green River in a Class 4A West matchup on Thursday.

But the Lady Red Devils are not dwelling on their past. They’re looking to their future.

“We learned a lot from that game,” Evanston’s Hannah Ellingford. “I think this week in practice and our future games, we’ll definitely show what we’ve got.”

Evanston, ranked fourth in Class 4A, fell to Green River 21-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18, 15-12. The Lady Red Devils are now 14-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

“We’re a better team now than when we came in,” Evanston head coach Tera Lawlar said. “At the end of the day, it’s how we finish. I’ve been telling them that all along.”

Evanston held an 18-10 lead in Game 2 and led Green River (14-8, 2-2) 12-11 in the final set.

“This game definitely exposed areas in our defense that we need to work on,” Lawlar said. “I guess the game speed of it made it real. We’ve been talking about it in practice and we’ve seen it in practice, but when it’s executed at game speed, you see it and you feel it.

“You hate to lose, but we know what we need to fix. We’ll work on it. We’ll have a lot of coaches on boxes, so they have to make sure that blocking closes and defense rotates and covers the blocking shadow.”

Allysa Dean has a team-leading 30 aces and 318 digs, while Emmery Wagstaff paces the Lady Red Devils with 208 kills.

Hailey Barker has a team-high 456 assists through 63 games, to go along with 27 aces.

Aspen Anderson has recorded 25 solo blocks and 47 block assists. Hannah Ellingford also has 25 solo blocks and 30 block assists.

“I feel like we’re starting to develop more each game that we play and each practice that we have,” Anderson said. “We’re still kind of growing. I think once regionals and state comes, I think we will do really well.”

Evanston is back in action on Friday at Kelly Walsh.

“I think we will show a lot of progress this week,” Ellingford said. “I think this weekend, we’ll be a better team than we were on Thursday.”
