Lady Eagles remain undefeated after win against Wyoming Indian

LYMAN – The Lyman High School girls’ basketball team still has room for improvement.

That’s a good thing for head coach Jason Hansen.

Without all its players in the lineup and having only a few plays memorized, Lyman improved to 7-0 on Friday after claiming a 51-46 win against Wyoming Indian in a non-conference matchup.

“We’ve got lots to work on. We have a hard time remembering our plays right now,” Hansen said. “We need a lot of reps to get those in tune. Right now, I call a play, and they’re like, ‘what are you even calling?’ They have a few down, but they have a lot more to learn. We have a lot of room to get better.”

Lady Eagles’ junior McKinley Bradshaw, who poured in a game-high 26 points with 12 rebounds and eight steals, agrees with her coach.

“He’ll call one and we’ll get half way through it and then we’ll be like, ‘what do we do now?’ It’s something we need to work on,” Bradshaw said. “We don’t know what’s coming or what we’re capable of yet.”

Lyman is also slated to get two players back from injury. McKailey Bradshaw (knee) is set to return within the week, while Kassidy Nelson (ankle) hopes to be back in the lineup by mid-January.

And yet, the Lady Eagles are undefeated and ranked second in Class 3A. Lyman has had wins against Wind River, Cokeville, Green River, Rock Springs, Cheyenne Central, Rich and now Wyoming Indian.

“It’s a good feeling to be undefeated and knowing we can get a lot better,” Hansen said. “This team we just played is a good team. They’re going to be right there in the Class 2A state hunt. It’s good to get a win like that. We’ll continue to work to get better and hopefully make the right adjustments at the right time.”

Lyman led by as many as five points in the first quarter, but the Lady Chiefs ended the period on an 11-4 run to take a 15-13 lead. The Lady Eagles trailed for the majority of the second quarter and went into the break facing a 24-21 deficit.

McKinley Bradshaw scored eight points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer with 6:42 to play to give Lyman a two-point lead.

The Lady Eagles didn’t trail the rest of the way.

Wyoming Indian, ranked fourth in Class 2A, pulled within one with 4:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Lyman was able to hold off the Lady Chiefs down the stretch.

“They’re a good team and I enjoy playing them,” McKinley Bradshaw said.

The Lady Eagles will return to action Saturday, Jan. 6 with a home game against Mountain View.

“We knew this was going to be a close game,” Hansen said. “It was a good game for us to have, because we play Mountain View next Saturday. It was good to work some kinks out.”
