EVANSTON — The Evanston High School volleyball team is entering regional play with the mindset to win each point.
No, the Lady Red Devils do not expect to actually sweep their way through the tournament without conceding a point. But it is a reminder to take it one game at a time.
Evanston will begin its test at 1 p.m. Friday against Rock Springs at Natrona High School.
“We have three paths to playing on Saturday,” Lady Red Devils’ coach Tera Lawlar said on Wednesday at practice. “I definitely have a preferred path, but they need to know if something doesn’t work out, even in the set or the first 5-10 points, there’s still plenty of room to work with.”
Evanston (16-12, 5-5 4A West) isn’t discussing a fourth scenario.
The winner between the fourth-seeded Lady Red Devils and the fifth-seeded Lady Tigers will play the winner of No. 3 Natrona and No. 6 Jackson at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of that contest qualifies for the state tournament.
The loser of Jackson/Natrona and Evanston/Rock Springs will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
The loser of the 4:30 p.m. game and the winner of the 6:30 p.m. game will meet at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The winner qualifies for the state tournament, while the loser is eliminated.
Kelly Walsh earned the top seed and Green River is the No. 2 seed. Both teams automatically qualify for state Nov. 2-4 in Casper.
Friday’s winner from the 8:30 p.m. game on Friday will take on Kelly Walsh at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner from the 4:30 p.m. game on Friday will take on Green River at noon on Saturday.
A third-place game is set for 2 p.m. while the championship battle will take place at 4 p.m.
“We’ve talked to all routes to victory – to playing on Saturday,” Lawlar said.
Evanston believes it can reach the title game and win.
“I think we’ve seen a few glimpses of us being our very best,” Aspen Anderson said. “During regionals, I feel like we can expect more.”
Evanston beat Rock Springs in five sets on Sept. 19 and took down the Lady Tigers in four sets on Oct. 20. The Lady Red Devils claimed a win in five sets against Natrona on Sept. 9, but the Fillies handed Evanston a four-set loss on Oct. 7.
Green River has gotten the better of the Lady Red Devils three times this season. Kelly Walsh has two wins against Evanston – both were in straight sets.
“I feel like we’re going to do really well during this tournament,” Ajahonna Archuleta said.
Added Anderson: “If we play our hardest, I think we can be a good contender.”
