Coach Berger: Local program enjoying vigorous comeback

EVANSTON — If you love sports and enjoy watching athletes compete for the love of the game, then you should attend a Special Olympics event.

Evanston hosted several Special Olympics events Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, including from track and field, swimming and basketball. Approximately 40 athletes competed in a variety of events.

Local teacher Ryan Berger said he is enjoying his second season coaching Evanston’s Special Olympics team.

“I love coaching any kind of sports,” Berger said, “but it is an honor to coach for the Special Olympics. These kids keep me young.”

Berger explained that the Special Olympics in Evanston had waned a few years ago but is now enjoying a vigorous comeback.

“The future of Special Olympics in Evanston is very bright,” he said. “The success is due to the help from high school students and the support of our community. Evanston has always taken great pride in all of our sports.”

Athletes will head to Laramie in May to compete in the state events. From there, they can qualify for the national events to be held in Seattle this year. Berger said there are two basketball players in Wyoming who have qualified for the national event and one bowler.

From there, athletes can qualify for the international competition.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for their support,” Berger said. “Without all the volunteers, and parents who drive their athletes to the events, this wouldn’t happen. We have had an excellent week, thanks again, to the Evanston community, the schools, the student volunteers and everyone who participates. We are so proud of all the athletes — they are amazing kids.”
