Evanston golf team shows improvement

EVANSTON — The Evanston High School golf team traveled to Kemmerer and Star Valley last week. Coach Jerry Carroll said the players are showing improvement as the season progresses.

The boys’ team placed first at the Kemmerer tournament, led by Brady Hurd who shot a 77, which was also good enough for the best individual score of the tournament.

Mason Smith shot an 86. Three Red Devil golfers shot an 89, Braxton Lind, Mason Ellingford and Dominic DeAnzi. Jayden Cornell shot a 97 while Kai Haukaas shot a 98. Reed Robinson scored a 99 and Ty Blair shot 110 followed by Colter Walton with a 149.

The team totaled 341, just ahead of Star Valley.

Then the team went to Star Valley and Valley View golf course for a two-day tournament with nine teams represented.

The boys’ team placed third with a total of 676 points after scoring 341 on the first day and 335 on the second day. Star Valley won the event with a total of 651 and Riverton was second with a total of 673.

Brady Hurd, once again, led the way for the Red Devils by shooting a 78 on the first day and 80 an the second for a total of 158. Hurd had the third best individual score.

Braxton Linn scored 84 and 79 for a total of 163 and Mason Smith shot an 86 and a 91 for a total of 177. Mason Ellingford shot a 93 and 85 for a total of 178 and Dominic DeAnzi shot a 96 and an 82 for a 178. Jayden Cornell shot a 99 and a 94 for 193 while Reed Robinson shot a 99 and a 96 for a 195 total. Kai Haukaas shot a 106 and a 104 and Ty Blair shot a 116 and 114 for a total of 230.

The girls’ team placed fourth with a total of 643. Star Valley was first with a score of 561.

Lexi Cornell led the way by shooting an 82 on both days for a total of 164. Kira Sponenburgh shot 97 and 92 for a 179. Alexia Juarez, a freshman, shot a 156 and a 144.

The golf team is playing in Rock Springs against 12 teams.

“We are seeing improvement in all of players,” said Carroll. “We are working on better consistency and we are excited about having a couple of new players who will be beneficial to the team.”
