Wyoming newspapers dominate competition

The Uinta County Herald and the state of Wyoming performed quite well at this year’s National Newspaper Association (NNA) awards.

The NNA honors the best in community journalism and advertising.  The state of Wyoming took home “Best of the NNA” for the third time consecutively and fourth overall time in the award’s five-year existence.

For Best Breaking News Story, the Herald won third for “School Bus Stops and Sex Offenders: Should They Be At the Same Address?” by Hayden Godfrey and Bryon Glathar.

Herald Sports Editor Don Cogger took first place for Best Sports Column, “The World Needs More Sams.”  Judges said, “after reading this, I feel like I know Sam - and I definitely feel the pain of having one less person like this walking the Earth.”

Cogger also won second place for Best Sports Photo with “Just Along For the Ride.”  Judges said of the photo, “that’s a lot of bull and you have to admire the rider. I spent more time looking at this photo, just trying to figure out how the rider escaped. Great job.”

Cogger, who is also the Kemmerer Gazette Sports Editor, won Best Sports Photo honorable mention with “Down But Not Out.”  “You can feel the pain on the face of the little catcher. I hope they got the out,” a judge commented.
