EVANSTON — Local law enforcement officers do more than protect the community, especially this time of the year, when they focus on youth who might be in need of a little Christmas spirit.
Each year, officers select several children from the community, eat breakfast with them and take them on a shopping spree. They also let the kids ride in their vehicles, sounding sirens and flashing lights.
“It’s a great feeling to see the smile on the kid’s face,” Evanston police Lt. Ken Pearson said. “It warms your heart this time of year.”
Pearson said residents often call the police to find out what’s going on as a parade of loud, flashing cop cars proceeds from the Hampton Inn to Wal-Mart. Don’t worry, it’s just our men and women in blue spreading Christmas cheer.
Pearson said breakfast starts around 7:30 a.m. and the caravan will arrive at Wal-Mart a little after 8 a.m.
