EVANSTON — The American Red Cross held a blood drive in Evanston’s Machine Shop on Wednesday, Oct. 11, and turnout was high enough that some people had to be turned away due to lack of supplies.
Jamie Riccobono, account manager for the American Red Cross out of Salt Lake City, said that 24 people had made appointments in advance and the available walk-in spots for the day filled quickly. “Evanston is an extremely giving community,” said Riccobono.
She said the American Red Cross is typically at various locations in Evanston once a month, sometimes more often, for blood drives, and that there is usually very good participation from area residents.
Evanston man Jeff Martin waited for his turn on Wednesday and said he frequently participates. “I started giving about three or four years ago and now just come pretty regularly,” said Martin. “It seems like they need a lot right now with everything that’s been happening.”
Local woman Natalie Bott said she donates blood every time the Red Cross is in town. “It just makes me feel good to help someone,” said Bott.
Anyone wishing to view a schedule for local blood drives can go to redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive. According to the website, the next event scheduled in Evanston is on Monday, Nov. 6, at Evanston High School, and appointments can be made online.
