EVANSTON — Practice makes perfect, or so they say. Practice is a widely known ingredient for success. When it comes to reading, it is no different. However, for some children, reading is an uninteresting subject, so to get kids to enjoy reading, why not make it into a recreational activity?
The Evanston Parks and Recreation District continues its annual program, showing kids that reading can be a recreational subject as well as giving their brain exercise.
The Reading is Recreation program has been going on since the 1980s. While it routinely has been based at the rec center, this year organizers originally hoped to hold it at the Bear River Greenway; however, due to a snowy forecast, it will, after all, be held at the rec center.
Originally, the Kiwanis Club began the program but the club has since disbanded. Steve Liechty, former president of Kiwanis, came up with the idea for the Evanston Parks and Rec to do the event. Liechty is also the current Recreation Division Manager.
He said the event will be changed up a little from past years. The goal is to make reading fun. To do so, they will put up obstacle courses and hand out instructions that the kids read while acting out popular books, such as Harry Potter or Dr. Seuss books, as they have in the past.
On top of the physical fun, children will also get a story read to them, along with a new book for them to take home. There will also be the opportunity for kids to pick out a book from a used book collection.
Sponsored by Evanston Regional Hospital, Uinta County Library, and Evanston Parks and Recreation District, Reading is Recreation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 28. The event is free and open to kids from pre-school to eighth grade. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.
