Evanston upsets Green River

GREEN RIVER – The Evanston High School football team claimed a 27-24 win over No. 2 Green River on Friday night in a Class 3A West Conference game.

The Red Devils (3-3, 2-2) trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but scored three unanswered touchdowns to take a 20-10 lead with 9:12 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Rylie Griggs, who had a team-leading 11 tackles, gave Evanston a cushion when he returned an interception 33 yards for a score to give the Red Devils a 27-17 lead with 2:31 to play.

Junior running back Tyus Cornia ran for 137 yards on 30 carries and had two touchdowns.

Seth Lloyd was 9 of 13 for 105 yards with an interception and a touchdown. Pablo Escalante caught one pass – a 13-yard touchdown reception to help lead Evanston.

Chance Hofer, who entered the game as the top passing quarterback in Class 3A, was 19 of 31 for 240 yards with an interception and two touchdown passes. He also ran for 58 yards on 11 carries.

Devin Love had nine catches for 123 yards for the Wolves (4-1, 2-1), who were the No. 1 offensive team in Class 3A entering the game.

Evanston has a bye week coming up.
