Evanston isn’t the right place for immigration detention center

Editor:

We oppose the construction of the proposed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Evanston. Several cities in Utah have turned down this facility for various reasons. There is certainly no reason we should have the leftovers.

Camp Williams in Bluffdale, Utah, is the obvious location since it is already a federal facility. It is much more convenient for counsel access, especially in the winter.

The proposed facility is to be located next to our beautiful state park and proposed future fairgrounds. This is not the economic development we need. We, like many others, like the small-town feeling of Evanston.

There will be a meeting for all interested people from 3-5 p.m. at Hamblin Park on Sunday, Aug. 18.
