EVANSTON — Directing the Evanston Civic Orchestra (ECOC) this season is James Cavazos, originally from Houston, Texas. Cavazos moved to Evanston in 2020 during the pandemic when he and his wife Victoria decided to leave Texas.

Evanston Rotary International spent the fall months working to benefit local elementary school children in Uinta County. Throughout October, Rotary members collected donations of “The Big 5” winter clothing items for school kids, including coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves, to help those in need stay warm on the playground throughout the winter.

The next great American singer-songwriter just might hail from Uinta County. Twenty-year-old Lyman native Kira Dawn Walk, better known artistically as Kira Dawn, won the 2023 Wyoming Singer-Songwriter Competition in Ten Sleep last month. Having only started writing and performing songs a mere 14 months ago, Dawn is making considerable waves on the state’s music scene.
The Evanston Union Presbyterian Church and the Evanston Historic Preservation Commission invite the public to join them for an evening reception, which will include wine, chocolates and conversation, in order to help raise matching funds for the restoration of the church’s historic stained glass windows.
EVANSTON — Local historian Shelly Horne was the guest speaker at the Uinta County Museum’s last brown bag lunch for the season. A large crowd gathered in the Beeman-Cashin building to listen as Horne provided a history of Engine 4420, its life in Evanston and the current project to restore the engine to a working condition.
Uinta County Sheriff Andy Kopp recently received notice from Gov. Mark Gordon that he has been appointed to serve on the Wyoming Emergency Response Commission. In a letter dated Aug. 21, Gov. Gordon congratulated Kopp and said he would be serving at the pleasure of the governor for an indefinite term.
The University of Wyoming Extension recently welcomed Samantha Krieger as Uinta County’s 4-H youth development educator. Krieger recently moved from Utah, where she worked as the Summit County 4-H coordinator.
EVANSTON — The third annual Ladies Moonlight Paddle was held Friday, Aug. 25, at the Bear Ice Ponds and raised around $3,500 from the silent auction and registration fees. Funds go to any maintenance or projects for the Bear River Greenway, which serves as a natural and cultural focal point of the community.
FORT BRIDGER — The 50th Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous over Labor Day weekend at the Fort Bridger State Site turned time back to the early 1800s as the rendezvous recreated a slice of early American history. Weather hit the area Sunday evening as the sky opened up and delivered a cloudburst, sending people inside and dispersing the crowd. Monday’s rain added to the fast shutdown of the rendezvous as many people packed up quickly and head for home.
