Going into last weekend’s Cokeville Invitational, Evanston High School head volleyball coach Tera Lawlar didn’t quite know what to expect from her Lady Devils squad.

Sure, they have talent, but with just one senior on the roster — and just three players total with any varsity experience — who’s to say how they’d react once they stepped on the court against some of the tougher teams in the region, regardless of classification?

Turns out she needn’t have worried. If the Lady Devils were intimidated, it didn’t show, as they posted a 4-2 record for the tournament, and won the Consolation Championship, turning more than a few heads in the process.

“I’m excited,” Lawlar said. “We’re embracing the fact that we’re young. The girls are so willing to work together. They’re young, and they’re silly and they’re fun. It’s refreshing. And they really like each other — they have this youthful exuberance that’s infectious. And they’re a crafty, savvy bunch. I don’t have a heavy arm, a big hitter. But they know volleyball — they have good shots. It’s kind of gritty, in a weird way. I’m excited for them.”

The Lady Devils will host Border Wars this weekend, with just about every available gym in town being used for that purpose. Lawlar said practice this week will be geared toward improving consistency in all facets of the game.

“Every player will have a focus to work on in practice this week to help with the betterment of the team,” Lawlar said. “Something to work on to build consistency, so they can see immediate team results, but also build their confidence, so that we can build off of that.”

Lady Devils 1

The Lady Devils opened the tournament Friday against host Cokeville – ranked No. 1 in 1A – falling to the Panthers in four sets, 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 23-25, 20-25).

Freshman Kyan Lawlar had a memorable varsity debut, leading the attack with 19 kills, followed by eight kills from Rhyen Debenham. Alyssa Brown added six kills, while Autumn Neely finished with five.

At the service line, Kaisli Fitch and Jaylie Critchfield had two aces apiece. Brown led the team with 22 digs, followed by Lawlar with 16 and Critchfield with 11.

Lady Devils 3,

Preston 0

The Lady Devils bounced back from the loss to Cokeville with a three-set sweep of Preston, Idaho, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.

Alyssa Brown led the attack with 10 kills, followed by Kyan Lawlar with four kills and two kills each from Jaylie Critchfield, Kaisli Fitch, Rhyen Debenham and Autumn Neely.

Fitch led the team at the service line with four aces, followed by three from Brown and two from Debenham.

Brown and Lawlar finished with 11 digs each; Debenham had five.

West Side 0

The Lady Devils closed out play Friday with a sweep of West Side, Idaho, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19).

Kyan Lawlar and Alyssa Brown continued to lead the attack, with 12 kills apiece; Jaylie Critchfield and Kaisli Fitch finished with four kills apiece.

Lawlar had the hot hand at the service line, with four aces; Critchfield and Fitch had two aces apiece. Three Lady Devils finished with double-digit digs, led by Brown with 12; Critchfield and Lawler had 11 and 10, respectively.

A tired Lady Devils squad took the floor Saturday morning against Lyman, and still battled hard, falling in four sets, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 27-26, 25-22).

Kyan Lawlar continued her impressive first tournament with 12 kills, followed by nine kills from the veteran, Rhyen Debenham. Autumn Neely took charge at the service line with four aces, followed by two aces apiece from Jaylie Critchfield, Lawlar and Fitch. Critchfield led the team in digs with 20, followed by Brown with 19 and Lawlar with 14; Debenham also finished in double digits, with 11.

Rich 0

The Lady Devils shook off the loss to Lyman with a sweep of Rich, Utah, 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-16).

Kyan Lawlar and Alyssa Brown led the attack with 10 kills apiece, followed by five each from Rhyen Debenham and Jaylie Critchfield.

Brown led at the service line with three aces, while Critchfield and Lawlar had 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively.

The Lady Devils earned a rematch with Cokeville in the Consolation Championship, this time sweeping the host team 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 27-25).

Kyan Lawler and Alyssa Brown once again led the attack with double-digit kills, 15 for Lawlar and 10 for Brown. Jaylie Critchfield finished with five kills, while Kaisli Fitch had two. At the service line, Brown had the hot hand with six aces, followed by Critchfield with three. Brown also led the team in digs with 13, followed by Cassidy Coley, with 11.
