Wrestling battles in Ron Thon

EVANSTON — Forty-three teams from across the Cowboy State converged in Riverton for the annual Ron Thon Memorial wrestling tournament on the weekend of Jan. 25-26, with no real surprises in terms of ranked teams and team scores. The top three teams in Class 4A secured the top-three spots in order of finish, followed by the top-two teams in Class 3A placing fourth and fifth.

The Evanston Red Devils placed 13th, just a half-point behind 12th-place Glenrock, with Red Devil senior Pablo Escalante earning third-place honors at 195 pounds as Evanston’s top individual performer at the tournament that combines Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A teams from Wyoming. Top-ranked Kelly Walsh scored 217.5 points to win the Ron Thon, with Class 4A’s second-ranked Green River Wolves placing second with a team score of 181. The Thunder Basin Bolts were third with 152 points, followed by Star Valley with 138 and the Powell Panthers rounding out the top-five with 136.5 team points.

The Rock Springs Tigers, Natrona County Mustangs, Sheridan Broncs and the Kemmerer Rangers all scored over 100 points to claim places six through nine. Then came Cheyenne East, Douglas, Glenrock and Evanston. The Red Devils scored 69 points. The rest of the pack in order of finish was Pinedale, Moorcroft, Torrington, Wheatland, Cokeville, Cheyenne Central, Big Piney, Lyman, Riverton, Cody, Worland, Thermopolis, Rawlins, Laramie, Mountain View, Burns/Pine Bluffs, Lander Valley, Rocky Mountain, Southeast, Shoshoni, Lovell, Buffalo, Greybull/Riverside, Cheyenne South, Campbell County, Wind River, Newcastle/Upton, Saratoga, Jackson, Dubois and Wyoming Indian.

The most recent rankings for individual wrestlers, courtesy of WyoWrestling.com have been released, with a few Red Devil wrestlers re-entering the top-7 and a few dropping out or changing ranked positions. Brandon VanGieson is sixth at 106 pounds; Kasen Landry is fifth at 120 pounds; Kendall Cummings is seventh at 132 pounds; Rylie Griggs is fifth at 170 pounds; Clay Lester is seventh at 182 pounds and Pablo Escalante is ranked second at 195 pounds.

Evanston will host the powerhouse Green River Wolves in dual scheduled for 5 p.m. this Wednesday, Jan. 30, the final time this season to cheer on the Red Devil wrestlers at Red Devil Gym.
