CASPER — Just days after signing a national letter of intent to play basketball at Utah State University Eastern, Evanston High School senior Emmery Wagstaff opened the 2017-18 season with a 30-point performance to lead the Lady Red Devils to a 62-58 win against Laramie on Thursday in the first round of the Casper Invitational.

Wagstaff, a two-time All-State player, was 8 of 22 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line to lift Evanston past Laramie, the No. 4 team in Class 4A preseason rankings.

Evanston did not receive any votes in the poll after compiling a 12-15 record last season.

Hailey Barker poured in 17 points to help lead the attack for Evanston. The senior guard was 10 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Kori Deru chipped in with seven points and senior Megan Fisher added six points to help lead Evanston (1-0).

Evanston will take on Sheridan at noon today before facing Riverton at 3 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be played at Casper College.
