Track team wins Evanston Invitational

It was a warm and windy day Thursday when athletes from around southwest Wyoming descended on Evanston for the 2017 Evanston Invitational. There were seven school competing in the track and field event including: Pinedale, Big Piney, Green River, Rock Springs, Mountain View, Kemmerer and Evanston.

Girl’s events

In the 100-meter dash, Andri Dewey of Green River won with a time of 12.44; the closest competitor from Evanston was Amber Lowe who finished in 7th place with a time of 13.86. Kaelyn Hiatt finished in 10th and Bryssa Blevins was 11th with times of 14.00 and 14.15 respectively.

In the 200-meter dash, Andri Dewey once again won the event with a time of 26.68 and Jenna Tethal from Evanston was 10th with a time of 29.96.

Breila Fuller has proven she can handle the longer distance runs very well. In the 400-meter run, Fuller finished in second place behind Bailee Radakovich of Rock Springs. Radakovich completed the event with a time of 1:01.96 and Fuller finished with a time of 1:06.00. Evanston’s Gabby Hall finished in 4th place with a time of 1:11.88 and Lexie Demander was 5th with a time of 1:12.37.

Fuller won the 800-meter run, one of her strongest events, with a time of 2:31.26. Alexis Walk finished 6th with a time of 2:57.63 and Emma Feuz was 7th with a time of 2:59.91.

Alexis Walk finished the 1600-meter run in 5th place with a time of 6:42.79.

The 100-meter hurdles was an exciting event. Tayler Groll was 3rd with a time of 16.58 and Alexia Leland was 4th with a time of 16.69.

Groll and Leland finished in the same positions (3rd and 4th) in the 300-meter hurdles. Groll completed the event in 51.87 and Leland finished with a time of 52.17.

Evanston finished in 4th place in the 4X400 meter relay. The team of Leland, Kaelyn Hiatt, Zocia Nowakowski and Bryssa Blevins finished with a time of 57.58.

In the 4X400 relay, Evanston’s team of Lexie Demander, Hiatt, Groll and Leland won the event with a time of 4:28.56.

The team of Bailey Barker, Fuller, Demander and Maggie Moore won the 4X800 yard relay with a time of 11:54.16.

Emmery Wagstaff won the high jump event, clearing the bar at five feet.

The Lady Red Devils took the first four places in the pole vault event. Tayler Groll was first clearing 8-feet. Amber Lowe, Kaelyn Hiatt and Zoncia Nowakowski place 2nd through 4th with identical vaults at 7-feet 6-inches.

Wagstaff also won the long jump with a final jump of 15-07.25 feet.

All season, Leila Martinez has dominated the triple jump and has qualified for state. She has a slight injury to her knee and sat out the event at the Evanston Invitational. Emmery Wagstaff stepped up and placed 4th in the triple jump with a distance of 32.03.00 feet.

Rylee Guertzgen was third in the shot put event with a distance of 31-04.5 feet.

Boys’ events

In the boys’ 200-meter dash, Kody Smith was 5th with a time of 23.68 and Gabe Morris was 7th with a time of 23.81.

Morris finished 5th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.71 and Cris Periman was 6th with a time of 57.37.

Tyrell Halladay won the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.30.

Garrett Berger placed 9th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:29.39.

Hyrum Cooper was 5th in the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:28.20.

Jesse Barker showed his athletic abilities in the 110-meter hurdles by winning the event. He completed the race with a time of 15.53. Hunter Groll was 6th with a time of 16.99.

Barker was 2nd in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.96, just behind Zane Meisner of Big Piney with a time of 42.53. Groll was 4th with a time of 43.18.

Evanston was the 4X400 meter relay when the team of Barker, Groll, Hallady and Gabe Morris completed the event with a time of 3:39.87.

The team of Garrett Berger, Tyrell Halladay, Joseph Trujillo and Charles Winfield placed 2nd in the 4X400 yard relay with a time of 9:39.01.

Seth MacDonald won the boys’ high jump clearing the bar at 6-02.00 feet.

In the boys’ pole vault, Cris Periman was 5th with a height of 10-06.00 feet and MacDonald was 6th with 10-00.00 feet. Hunter Groll was 8th at 9-06.00 feet.

MacDonald placed 3rd in the triple jump with a distance of 41-01.00. Seth Lester was 8th with a distance of 38-10.00.

Matthew Geary placed 4th in the shot put with a distance of 39-06.50. Geary also placed 3rd in the discus throw with a distance of 117-06.5 feet. Damian Hawkins was 6th with a distance of 110-08.

Overall, the Evanston team won the event with a total of 264.50 points. Pinedale was seceond with 220.50 points.
