As part of his senior project at Evanston High School, Mason Smith, son of Kim and Mark Smith, made a cedar chest in Chris Reynolds’ shop class. The chest is made of oak with cedar lining, with a carving on the front. Inside is a shelf with drawers that pulls up when the lid is raised. Scott Kallas of Kallas Automotive saw the cedar chest at the class display and asked Mason if he would sell it. Mason agreed and on Wednesday, October 10, he met Kallas at the school. Also invited to the meeting were two police officers, Ben Gilmore and Cody Webb. Mason had decided to give the $500 that Kallas paid him to the Shop with a Cop program, which provides children in need with breakfast and a morning of Christmas shopping. (HERALD PHOTO/Kayne Pyatt)
