Students face off in district spelling bee

Posted

EVANSTON — Uinta Meadows Elementary fifth-grader Kaylie Davis bested the competition at the Uinta County School District No. 1 spelling bee held on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Evanston Middle School. Her winning word was “panegyric,” which means a public speech or published text in praise of someone or something.

Davis, who was also the champion of the UME school-wide spelling bee, came out on top against stiff competition among the top five finishers from all four district elementary schools and both middle schools.

Three of the top five finishers were students from Uinta Meadows, which UME Principal Jerrod Dastrup credited to fifth-grade teacher and spelling bee coach Kathy Cluny. “She just does an amazing job preparing these kids,” he said.

Second place went to EMS seventh-grader Hyrum Baxter and third went to EMS sixth-grader Breyer Faddis, both of whom said they basically just studied on their own to prepare for the bee. All three top finishers will now get to compete in the statewide spelling bee on March 24 at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.

The first-place winner of the state bee is awarded a basket of gifts and games, along with $4000 toward travel expenses to compete in the national bee in Washington, D.C.

Rounding out the top five finishers were Kya Coles and Mason Young, both from Uinta Meadows.
