UME holds reading celebration

EVANSTON — Uinta Meadows Elementary held its annual Gigantic Reading Celebration to reward summer reading on Thursday, Sept. 28, with approximately 170 students attending. Literacy coach Becky Symes said that the school had three different levels of rewards for students who read over the summer break. Students who read at least 1600 minutes earned an invite to the after-school celebration, which was the top shelf prize.
Symes said that they had 182 students turn in calendars for reading over the summer and nearly all of those read enough to qualify for the top shelf. Other prizes included a pizza party during school and a reading t-shirt.
The celebration included bouncy houses and slides, dancing, face painting, cotton candy, snow cones, dodgeball and other playground fun. Several UME staff members stayed after school to supervise.
Principal Jerrod Dastrup said that, on average, Uinta Meadows students had read more minutes during the summer than at any other school in the state over the past two years. He is hopeful this year will make it three in a row once the numbers are totaled.
