EVANSTON — The Homerun for a Cure softball tournament took place this past Saturday in an effort to raise funds for the Uinta Cancer Care Foundation.
Toni Hawks, who is the event organizer, has been a participant in the annual Homerun for a Cure. She took interest in organizing the event herself after it was canceled one year, because she believed that it was important for the community to continue coming together in support of cancer patients and survivors. With the help of her family, she has kept the tradition of the tournament alive. This is her eighth year organizing the event.
“This event is about friends, family, and keeping the hope alive,” Hawks said.
Between 46 and 48 people participated in this year’s tournament, several of whom are cancer survivors themselves, and the event itself raised around $650 for the Uinta Cancer Care Foundation. However, the bulk of the fundraising is not yet completed, as it comes from a raffle for a Traeger Grill that goes on until the 23rd. The last opportunity to enter the raffle will be at O’Reilly’s 3rd Annual Car Show this coming weekend.
The event was sponsored by Phantom Fireworks, and participants gathered from Evanston, Rock Springs, and several locations in Utah, according to Linda Sinnacher.
