Roger William Cazin passed away in Evanston on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Rocky Mountain Care Center. He was born on June 25, 1944, in Evanston, to Gerald “Jerry” Richard Cazin and Ethel Laurina (Burdett) Cazin. He was their first son and second of five children.
On June 25, 1977, Roger married Lonnie Taylor in Evanston. They were the perfect match and have been inseparable ever since. On June 25, 2002, their 25th wedding anniversary and Roger’s birthday, they were sealed in the Ogden, Utah Temple.
Roger graduated from Evanston High in 1962, where he served as senior class president. He also earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Arizona State University and graduated in 1967.
Roger was a well-known and trusted businessman in the city of Evanston. He started his career at age 9, when he began working at Cazin & Houtz, dusting the paint cans and painting the shovel handles orange.
As a young teenager, he worked at the store after school and on Saturdays and developed a phonograph record business. He had a real love for the ’50s music —and Buddy Holly, in particular — so this was perfect for him. His ability as a salesman became apparent as he learned about his customers’ (of all ages) taste in music and would call them about new releases or recordings he thought they might like. He grew the business in that area significantly.
As an adult, Roger loved working alongside his dad, Jerry, and twin brothers, Gary and Gordon, for many years at Cazin’s, their family business. He was instrumental in expanding the store to include furniture and mattresses to better serve their community.
From a young age, Roger had a real interest in collecting coins and became very knowledgeable about them. He and Lonnie had their own side business, “Cazin’s Cache,” which they both loved! Roger loved traveling and they had many unforgettable adventures throughout their nearly 44 years together. They often talked about the many lifelong friends they had made along the way in the business and coin world.
Roger was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony. He served diligently in various callings and earned the rank of Life Scout in his youth.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lonnie; three stepchildren, Scott (Lesle) Adams, Sheldon (Lana) Adams and Sheryl (David) Kippen, all of Layton, Utah; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Carol Ann McCain of Jackson, his brother, Gordon (Terrie ) Cazin of Evanston, and sister-in-law, Ann Cazin of Ivins, Utah; and two nieces and four nephews: Jenny, Mary, Richard, Bryan, Billy and Sagan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gary and Richard; and his brother-in-law, Arthur E. McCain Jr.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to Roger and Lonnie’s dear friends who helped and cared for him throughout his life and, more recently, the wonderful staff at Rocky Mountain Care — it is so greatly appreciated!
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center located at 721 W. Cheyenne Dr. in Evanston.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to the funeral on Saturday, at the Stake Center.
Interment will follow in the Evanston City Cemetery. Attendees are requested to wear masks and observe social distancing guidelines.
