Rendezvous set for this weekend

EVANSTON — The 30th annual Bear River Rendezvous is rapidly approaching this weekend, with a full schedule both for committed enthusiasts and interested families.

The events will kick off with a memorial to the man known at the rendezvous as “Horse Doctor.” This year’s booshway, Dave Miller, said the memorial will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, with a gun salute and people talking about his life.

“He was actually one of our founding fathers of the ... Bear River Mountain Men club,” Miller said.

There will also be a warm-up shoot at 6 p.m. that night as people prepare for the following day’s events.

Saturday is the crown of the weekend’s events. It starts off at 9 a.m. with shooting competitions that go throughout the day, with a fur trade history and mountain man clothing demonstration starting at 10:30 a.m. Vendors will sell their wares as well.

From 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., there will be a Dutch oven cooking contest for anyone who wants to participate — as long as they are in period costume. However, bystanders can participate in judging at the end of the contest at 3 p.m.

From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m, there will be a tomahawk-throwing demo at the northeast corner of the rendezvous, followed by a firestarting demonstration and then a frying pan toss (when each player tries to throw frying pans as close as possible to someone without actually hitting him).

Miller said there will be a variety of other activities and demonstrations throughout the day, including blacksmithing, arrowhead making and spinning demos as well as kids’ games and candy cannons.

“We just like to get as much of the public out as we can,” Miller said.

Saturday’s events will finish with a gun raffle at 5:30 p.m., followed by a special guest, Many Strings, performing folk music around the campfire.

The rendezvous will not wrap up until Sunday afternoon, ; there will be a fun shoot from 9 a.m.-noon on Sunday. Miller said members of the public are welcome to join as long as they use period-correct rifles. There will also be another frying pan toss at 11 a.m.
