Red Devils track team participated in the Desert Hills Invitational

The Red Devils escaped the snow this weekend by traveling to St. George, Utah, to compete in the 2017 Desert Hills Invitational. The event had 27 high schools competing. Overall, the men’s and women’s team finished in 8th place with a score of 45. Desert Hills High School was first with 305.5 points.

The girls’ team was 7th with a score of 25 and the boys were in 8th place with 20 points.

More than 60 girls competed in the 1,600-meter race and Breila Fuller, who has been a tough competitor all year in long distance races, finished in 13th place with a time of 5:26.42. She also finished in 12th place in the girls’ 3,200-meter final. Fuller’s best event is the 800-meter race and she completed that event in 4th place with a time of 2:25.97.

Leila Martinez, who has been very competitive all season and has qualified for state in the triple-jump and the long jump, finished the girls’ 100-meter hurdles in 5th place with a time of 16.58. Tayler Groll placed 13th with a time of 17.93. 

Zocia Nowakowski won the triple-jump event with distance of 9.34 meters. Ashley Fry was second with a distance of 9.09 meters and Leila Martinez, who has dominated this event all season, fouled.

In the girls’ 300-meter hurdles, Tayler Groll finished in 10th place with a time of 50.71.

Alexia Leland finished in 9th pace in the 200-meter heat with a time of 28.52.

Megan Fisher has been strong all season in both the shot put and the discus throw. At the Desert Invitational, she placed second in the discus with a distance of 31.85 meters. She was also second in the shot put event with a distance of 31.85-meters. In the shot put varsity trials, Megan was 4th place and Rylee Guertzgen was 5th. Fisher and Guertzgen placed 4th and 5th respectively in the shot put finals. Fisher’s distance was 35-3.50 feet and Guertgen’s distance was 33-01.00.

Seth MacDonald and Jesse Barker have continued to perform well all season.

At the invitational, Barker placed 7th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.68. Hunter Groll placed 16th with a time of 18.42.

Barker finished the 300-meter hurdles in 2nd place with a time of 42.13 and completed the 300-meter hurdles varsity finals in 3rd place with a time of 42.27.

MacDonald, who qualified for state in the high jump in Rock Springs last week with a height of 6’ 4”, finished in 5th place in the long jump finals with a distance of 19.05.50 feet.

The boys did well in the 4X400-meter relay finishing in 8th place 47.85.

Coach Roy Barker is pleased with the team and how they are progressing.

“The kids are competing well,” said Barker in an email. “There have been some problems with injuries but they are getting better. We are seeing a lot of personal bests and the kids are doing well.”
