Red Devils sweep Cody and Riverton

EVANSTON — The Evanston Red Devils evened the season at 9-9, to reach the .500 mark for the first time, with double-digit road wins over Cody and Riverton, over the past weekend past, Feb. 8-9. The Red Devils defeated the Cody Broncs, 56-42, on Friday evening, and took care of the Riverton Wolverines, 58-40, on Saturday afternoon.

Both the Broncs and Wolverines have struggled a bit on the season at 2-13 and 3-14 on the season, respectively, but both teams are also capable of being dangerous, as they feature the two most prolific scorers in Class 4A basketball in Cody’s Elijah Layva and Riverton’s Treyton Paxton. The Red Devils were able to hold both under their season averages, minimizing their impact in the games.
Evanston trailed 8-7 when the first quarter buzzer sounded in Cody, but came back to take a 20-15 halftime lead. The Red Devils padded the lead to 14 points with three quarters complete at 36-22.

Lance Evans led the Evanston charge with 14 points and Garrett Berger chipped in 11. Seth Lloyd contributed nine points, followed by Mason Ellingford with eight and six each from Brady Hurd and Dawson Crofts. Chris Moeller also added two for the victorious Red Devils.
Cody was led by Layva’s game-high 17, eight points shy of his league-leading 25 points per game aggregate, with Hunter Hays adding 10 for the Broncs in the loss.

The Wolverines had the initial lead of the game with their first bucket, but the Red Devils were in command, 15-5, with the first quarter in the books and never looked back, up 31-17 at the break and 51-27, heading into the final frame.

Lloyd had the hot hand in the second and third quarters, connecting on six from downtown, to lead all scorers and set a new team high for the season with 26 points. Crofts contributed 11 and Evans added 10 for the Red Devils. Ellingford had six points while Hurd finished with three and Berger added two.

Paxton was held to 16 points, below his season average of almost 24 points per game.

Two all-important conference games are scheduled for this Thursday in Green River and at home against quadrant-leading Star Valley for “Senior Night” at Red Devil Gym on Saturday, Feb. 16.
