CASPER — It came down to the wire.

But when the final buzzer sounded, the Evanston Red Devils celebrated a 60-58 win over Riverton in the final session of the Casper Invitational on Saturday.

Evanston finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.

“I think we learned a lot about ourselves these last three days,” Evanston coach Lex Cornia said in a phone interview on Sunday. “We learned we can play with anybody when we play together, when we do the things we’re supposed to do. And when we don’t, we’re vulnerable.”

Chase Critchfield led all scorers with 25 points. The senior was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final period to help seal it for Evanston on Saturday.

Braxton Hiatt added 21 points for the Red Devils, who return to action on Dec. 14 at the Flaming Gorge Classic.

On Friday, Evanston claimed a 69-66 win against Sheridan.

Chandler Anderson scored 22 points, while Hiatt added 20 and Critchfield chipped in with 19 to lead the Red Devils in the second game of the season.

It wasn’t the way the Evanston Red Devils wanted to open the 2017-18 campaign when they suffered a 62-54 loss to Laramie in the Red Devils’ season opener on Thursday night at the Casper Invitational.

Anderson scored 13 points, while Lance Evans added 12 and Hiatt finished with 10.

Evanston (0-1) trailed 13-11 after the first quarter and 26-25 at the break. The Red Devils took a 40-38 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Evanston was outscored 24-14 in the final period as Laramie, the No. 4 Class 4A team in the boys’ basketball preseason poll, pulled away for the win.

“We also learned there’s a lot of talent in our conference,” Cornia said. “We’re talented too, but it’s up for grabs for anybody in the conference. There’s five or six teams that could make a run in March.”
