Red Devils enjoyed win but know the challenges facing Rawlins

EVANSTON — The Red Devil football team have been enjoying their season opener defeat of the Riverton Wolverines but are not resting on the their laurels, or the bench. They know they will face a formidable competitor tonight in Rawlins.

There were a lot of positive lessons learned in the Riverton game. As a team, they learned about their strengths and looked at areas where they need improvement, especially when playing Rawlins.

“As a team,” Coach Pat Fackrell said, “I think we learned that we can be very effective running the ball. We were able to be physical and play ball-control football. We made long, sustained drives without turning the ball over and we could put up a touchdown or more.”

The team practiced hard to prepare for the Riverton game.

“I think the game turned out as we expected,” Fackrell said. “We knew we had a strong run game and that we are pretty athletic, but we wanted to gauge ourselves against another team. We haven’t made any changes in our practices to prepare for Rawlins. We are just trying to clean up the mistakes we made and become more consistent in all phases of the game.”

In the Riverton game, both Jess Richins and Seth Lloyd played the quarterback position. Fackrell said that is likely to continue.

“Having two quarterbacks has been beneficial to us,” Fackrell said. “They both have their own skillsets and bring different tools to the table, and they push each other in the practice sessions.”

Looking forward to Rawlins Friday nights, Fackrell understands what the team will face.

“Playing Rawlins means our team will have to get off the ball well with both the offensive and defensive,” Fackrell said. “We will have to stay engaged on offense and get off the block on defense. One of their defensive backs brings a lot of pressure and they have a wide receiver that caught a lot of balls last week. Their running backs are good and they run hard. Out tackles will have to be very good and we will have to swarm the ball to be effective.”
