Five Red Devils earn All-State honors; win 4x200, 4x400

The Evanston High School indoor track and field teams wrapped up their seasons earlier this month at the State Indoor 3A Track & Field Meet in Gillette, with the Red Devils placing third as a team; the Lady Devils finished in fifth place.

“The kids did really well,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “Being 3A, there were more opportunities to score and place, so that was very beneficial. But I think we would have done well, regardless of class — we had some great times. I thought the boys might have a chance to win it going in, but we had a couple of things not go our way.”

The Red Devils won a pair of relay events, with the team of Zeke Walton, Ethan Moberley, Juan Navarro and Geo Cervantes taking the top spot in the 4x200, with a time of 1:35.20. The team of Walton, Navarro, Cervantes and Gabe Hutchinson won the 4x400 in a time of 3:31.99. Walton, Navarro, Cervantes Hutchinson and Moberley earned All-State honors for their efforts.

The boys’ 4x800 relay team of Cameron Hiatt, Braezden Mecham, Isaiah Lange and Derek Parks finished second, with a time of 8:36.05, while the 1600 sprint medley team of Ethan Moberley, Ayden Hartzell, Joey Leon and Isaiah Lange placed fifth, with a time of 3:54.09.

EHS senior Navarro was also the top Red Devil individual finisher, placing second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6 inches, and earning All-State honors; he also placed fifth in the 200 meters, with a time of 23.35.

“Juan actually scratched a jump by about an inch that would have won the meet,” Barker said. “He ended up getting All-State individually, which was great for him.

Hutchinson had a memorable day in the sprints, finishing third in both the 55 meters (6.68) and 200 meters (23.24); he also placed sixth in the 400 meters (52.17).

“Gabe had a really good weekend,” Barker said. “He placed in three events, as well as running in the relays.”

Rylan Ivie was third in shot put, with a toss of 45 feet, 6 inches. Also in the shot put, Kenyon Muir was fifth with a toss of 44 feet, .25 inches, while Braxton Bauer was ninth, with a toss of 42 feet, 3.75 inches.

“Shot put was a nice surprise for us,” Barker said. “The kids really performed well. Rylan had a big PR to take third, and Kenyon and Braxton are right there, with Braxton just missing the podium.”

Talia Conrad was the top Lady Devil finisher, placing third in the 200 meter run, with a time of 26.83; she also placed seventh in the 400 meter run, posting a time of 1:02.33.

“Talia Conrad had a great day, and just missed All-State in the 200 meters,” Barker said.

Other Top 10 finishes on the boys’ side included Derek Parks, who finished fifth in the 800 meters (2:02.61) and eighth in the 1600 meters (4:44.58). Trayton Wiedrich was seventh in the high jump (5 feet) and eighth in the pole vault (10 feet); Landon Palmer was ninth in the pole vault (10 feet).

For the girls, Jocelyn Capener was fifth in the 1600 (5:41.09) meters and sixth in the 800 meters (2:28.59), while Brenna Fackrell and Jessica McMurtrey were eighth in the long jump (14 feet, 11.5 inches) and shot put (31 feet, 7.5 inches), respectively.

Aubrey Horrocks was sixth in the 1600 meters, posting a time of 5:47.52.

The girls’ 4x400 relay team of Aubrey Horrocks, Kiara Worthing, Jocelyn Capener and Talia Conrad placed second, with a time of 1:52.74, while the team of Brenna Fackrell, Coaley Clifton, Kiara Worthing and Talia Conrad placed third in the 4x200 relay, with a time of 1:52.74.

The 4x800 relay team of Eliza Day, Jasmine Tapia, Savanna Winfield and Aubrey Horrocks finished fourth, with a time of 10:56.10.

“The girls had a great competition, and I’m excited to see how things go in the outdoor season for them,” Barker said.
