EVANSTON — Red Devil golf won their invitational tournament played at the Purple Sage Golf Course last Thursday and Friday, August 23-24.
The Red Devils combined for a score of 645 for the 36-hole tourney with Brady Hurd taking individual honors with a round of 154. Evanston held down the top-three places and tied for fourth in individual placings. Braxton Lind was the runner-up with a final tally of 156. Lind was followed by Red Devil teammates Mason Ellingford who fired a 167, good for third-place, and Mason Smith just one stroke back at 168 and tied for fourth-place. Red Devil golf has placed first in every tournament they have competed in the season so far, and won their own invitational by 65 strokes. The order of finish was: Evanston - 645, Riverton - 710, Pinedale - 742, Green River - 778, Lyman - 800, Jackson - 820 and Rock Springs - 882.
The young, Lady Red Devil golf team, all underclassmen, other than all-state performer and senior Kyra Sponenburgh, placed fourth among the four teams posting team scores. The order of finish for the girls’ side of the tourney ended this way: Riverton - 606, Rock Springs - 635, Pinedale - 671 and Evanston - 680. The top-three individual scores are combined for the team score in the girls’ tournament.
Sponenburgh placed second behind Sierra Legerski of Rock Springs to lead Evanston. The top-three places were Legerski with a 194, Sponenburgh at 196, with K. Davis of Riverton a stroke back at 197, to round out the top-three.
Star Valley and Kemmerer ordinarily compete in the Evanston Invitational, but Thursday and Friday were the first two days of classes for the Lincoln County schools and they opted not to attend.
Evanston golf coach Jerry Carroll is weighing some options for his teams, as Red Devil and Lady Red Devil golf received invites to tournaments in both Rock Springs and Laramie for the coming week. Look for more details in a future issue of the Herald.
