Coach Jerry Carroll is happy with what he is seeing so far in his golf team.
“It’s a young team,” Carroll said, “but they have been working hard. It is difficult because we started our season early and besides preparing for golf they are trying to get ready to start school.”
On Monday the team traveled to Rock Springs for a dual meet and they performed well.
Mason Smith led the boys’ team with a score of 82. Brady Hurd had an 86, Mason Ellingford shot 90, Braxton Lind shot 92, Reed Robinson shot 102, Jayden Cornell scored 105. Kai Haukaas had a disqualification.
In all, the boys’ team scored 350 and Rock Springs shot 420.
“It was a good game,” Carroll said, “To be competitive, we need to scoring in the 320 range. So we are doing well this early in the season.”
The girls had a good game, also. Lexi Cornell led the way with an 83. Allie Hanson shot 99 and Kira Sponenburgh shot 101. The team totaled 283 points to Rock Springs’ 293.
“I was very happy with the girls’ play,” Carroll said. “A good team score would be around 300 so we did very well. To beat teams like Kelly Walsh, we will need to be in the 250-point range.
“These players have been working hard and Lexi has spent a lot of time on her game. I just wish we had more girls coming out for golf. I would really like to get more freshman girls to come out and they can become great golfers, as well.”
On Tuesday, the golf team traveled to Star Valley and had a good day.
“The course in Star Valley is a shorter course and it showed in our scores,” Carroll said. “The conditions were perfect. The boys faced six teams and came in first with a team score of 325. This was a small junior varsity and varsity tournament.”
Brady Hurd led the boys’ team with a score of 76. Mason Smith scored an 82 while Mason Ellingford shot an 83. Braxton Lind shot an 84 and Jayden Cornell shot a 93. Reed Robinson shot 96 and Kai Haukaas shot 133.
Star Valley’s team was second with a score of 380 and Jackson Hole was third with 403.
For the girls, there were only two full teams, Evanston and Star Valley. Evanston had a team score of 273 and Star Valley had 310.
Lexi Cornell led the Lady Red Devils by shooting an 84. Kira Sponenburgh shot 90 and Allie Hanson shot a 99.
The Red Devil golf team traveled to Riverton, playing both Thursday and Friday.
“Riverton has a difficult, yet fantastic course,” Carroll said. “It is a long course with trees, lots of water and very fast greens. It’s the type of course that will make players better as they learn how to adjust.”
