EVANSTON — The Purple Sage Golf Club staged their annual club championship tournament this past weekend, August 11-12. Kipp Jones was crowned champion in the men’s division while Kari Williams, who will be inducted into Evanston High School Sports Hall of Fame next month, returned to defend her title, making it five or more in a row. Williams is the women’s golf coach at Rutgers University.
“If Kari’s in it, she’s going to win it. She’s just that good,” director of golf and resident PGA professional Scott Ehlers told the Herald.
Williams golfed for Evanston High School, winning individual medalist honors in both 1988 and 1989 as Wyoming’s top prep golfer. She received a scholarship to golf for the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After obtaining her accounting degree, Williams began to teach high school and coached basketball and golf. Prior to being named the women’s golf coach at Rutgers in 2014, Williams spent eight seasons as the head women’s golf coach at Columbia University.
Kim Porter had a string of consecutive championships under her belt before Williams began to return to her hometown for the club championship weekend. Porter finished tied for third with recently-graduated Lady Red Devil golfer Lexi Cornell, each entering the clubhouse with scores of 167. Williams won the tourney with a 145 score. Current Lady Red Devil standout Kyra Sponenburgh placed second, coming in with a 163 tally. Sponenburgh was paired with Williams in Sunday’s championship flight.
Kipp Jones won the men’s championship with a 144 two-day total, winning by a mere stroke over Wes Albertson’s combined rounds totaling 145.
“We had five or six guys in contention. It was an exciting weekend of great golf,” Ehlers said.
“The championship flight could have gone a lot of different directions.”
Ehlers also mentioned that Doug Eastman has dominated the senior flight division since its introduction.
“It’s pretty much odds on, that if Doug is entered in the senior division, he’ll be taking home the trophy,” Ehlers added.
Ehlers praised the club members and their board of directors for the Purple Sage.
“The board works really hard to put on a first-class event. They put a lot of effort into getting members to play. They orchestrate the club championship and the member-guest tournaments and it’s a pleasure to work with them on both events.”
