Outlaws go 2-1 in Green River tournament

Posted

Coming off a two-week break, the Evanston Outlaws pitched back-to-back shutouts on Friday and Saturday over Steamboat Springs, Colorado, 9-0, and 17-0 against Green River’s B-team before being narrowly defeated by Riverton, 5-4, on Sunday.

Kimball Madsen had a great day on the mound for Evanston, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out 10 in six and one-third innings. Jagger Mitchell came on in relief to finish the seven-inning affair.

The Outlaws scored one run in the first inning on an RBI-single by Seth Lloyd, but their bats really came to life in the fifth inning. Another single by Lloyd, sacrifice flies by Reid Gross and Beau Lloyd and a double by Griffen Mitchell accounted for four runs.

Brandon Wicks, Cris Periman and Brendon Thompson each had three hits for the Outlaws with Seth Lloyd showing the way, going 4-4 at the plate. Evanston cranked out 16 hits while limiting Steamboat Springs to just one hit in 22 at-bats.

The Outlaws matched their hit total of 16 against Green River’s B-Team on Saturday, but it was again the pitching that spelled the difference. Periman was credited with the victory, allowing just one hit over three innings, with Gus Allred finishing out for Evanston out of the bullpen. A mercy rule was employed after four innings of play with the Outlaws up comfortably, 17-0.

Jagger Mitchell led the team with two stolen bases and at the plate going 4-4. Seth Lloyd had three hits and Periman, Thompson, Ryan Fisher and Griffen Mitchell each collected two hits for the Outlaws, with most every team member scoring more than once.

On Sunday, Evanston and Riverton were tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning with Riverton at bat. With the count 1-0, Riverton’s Hinkle connected on a single that drove the winning run home for the Rangers.

Seth Lloyd took the loss for Evanston, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three. Lloyd did account for Evanston’s second home run of the season, going yard in the top of the seventh, and along with Wicks and Fisher, had multiple hits on the day. Evanston won in the hitting column with 11 hits to 10 for Riverton.

Evanston will host their Summer Slam tournament this Thursday-Saturday at Ross Kesterson Field.
