Outlaws defeated by Casper Oilers by 7 runs

EVANSTON — After their win on Saturday against Rock Springs, the Evanston Outlaws hosted the Casper Oilers on Monday for their first conference game. Evanston was unable to get a run on the board and lost 7-0.

Outlaws starting pitcher Kimball Madsen beaned the first batter he saw in the game, and early on, it looked like the young pitcher from Mountain View might be in for a long day.

After loading up the bases, the Outlaws turned a double play to get out of the inning without a scratch.

Madsen calmed down in the second and induced a groundball followed by two strikeouts.

In response to Madsen, Oilers starter Kobe Stoner struck out the side in the bottom half of the second.

The Oilers tallied the first run of the game in the third. Jesse Carr drew a walk, proceeded to steal second base, got to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error with two outs by shortstop Braeden Macdonald.

Stoner was a menace on the mound for the Oilers, striking out six batters in his four innings.

Madsen himself had five strikeouts for the Outlaws in five innings, and the lone run he allowed was unearned.

Evanston kept its deficit at 1-0 in the fifth, thanks to a three-up, three-down inning.

However, the bats just weren’t working offensively for the Outlaws. Evanston managed just six hits throughout the entire game.

After a strikeout to lead off the sixth inning, Hunter Hicks singled to give Evanston its first base hit since the first inning. With the score still 1-0, it appeared this could be the start of something for the home team. However, a fielder’s choice followed by a groundout ended the inning in quick fashion.

Casper extended its lead by one in the seventh with a one-out single by Eric Graham to drive in Brayden Deere.

The floodgates opened for the Oilers in the eighth as they mounted five runs off three singles, a double and an error. The inning accounted for nearly half of Casper’s base hits in the game. Brooks Browning, Daultyn Rux, Deere, Ethan Leech and Matthew Maddux all came around to score in the inning to jump the lead up to 7-0.

The Outlaws’ best chance to score came in the ninth with a leadoff double by Hicks, followed by a single by Seth Lloyd. With no outs, and two men in scoring position, the next two batters flew out, and the third struck out to end the game.

Evanston finished with just five hits to Casper’s nine in the game played under cold and windy conditions. Despite a strong performance by Madsen on the mound for Evanston, he was collared with the loss. Deere was the winning pitcher for Casper, and Rux earned a three-inning save to close out the game.
