North fourth graders explain ‘How the West was Really Won’

EVANSTON — Fourth graders at North Elementary performed in the musical, “How the West Was Really Won,” on Friday, Oct. 27. The students put on the show twice that morning, once for the entire student body and then again for parents, family, and friends to attend.

“How the West Was Really Won,” with lyrics by Grace Hawthorne and music by John F. Wilson, told the story of the settlement of the western United States. Students dressed in assorted attire for the musical, with cowboys, prospectors, Native Americans, pioneer women, politicians, and soldiers all represented.

Student Corbin Lake played the role of Storyteller, with some assistance from student Prompter Sierra Barnes.

Throughout the performance, dialogue interspersed with musical selections, and even some square dancing, told the tale of the American West, touching on events like westward migration, the discovery of gold and silver, the Civil War, the Pony Express and the invention of the telegraph, the construction of the transcontinental railroad, the conflict with and plight of Native Americans, the role of immigrant labor, and the birth of the American Dream.
