Maxie Lamond Platts

Maxie Lamond Platts passed away on December 29, 2022 in St. George, Utah at the age of 90.  He was born in Lyman on November 13, 1932.  He was the 15th of 17 children born to John L and Irene Rollins Platts.  His early years were spent working on the family ranch. 

As a freshman, he won the Rocky Mountain Wrestling AAU in his weight class of 105 lbs.

He joined the Navy in 1951 and served for four years during the Korean War.  He was based on the USS Boxer and USS Yorkshire naval ships.  Duties included loading bombs onto aircraft and hunting submarines. After his service, he went to Los Angeles, California, and worked as a carpenter.  He married Delores Hofer on March 31, 1956.  They moved back home to Lyman in 1962, where he ranched for 13 years.  During those years he enjoyed rodeo, horse racing, team roping and golf.  In 1974, Herb Berg came from California and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.  He subdivided the ranch and doubled down with rodeo, horse racing, team roping and golf!

He is survived by his wife Doe; children, Roxie and Bill Sherwin, Vicki Platts, Joey and Wendy Platts, Brad Platts and Robert and Kerry Platts.  He has one remaining sister, Evalyn Richey; 14 grandkids and 10 great-grandkids who all know him as Grandpa Damnit! 

His son Brian preceded him in death in September of 2020, as well as six brothers and nine sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the Urie LDS Stake Center, visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Lyman Cemetery.
