EVANSTON — A suspect is in custody following a brief manhunt in Evanston this morning. Jonathan Olivares was apprehended at approximately 11:15 a.m. in the area of 100 Main Street.
According to a press release from the Evanston Police Department, Olivares was making an appearance in Third District Court this morning, when he attacked and struck the Uinta County detention officer escorting him into court. Scanner traffic at about 10:40 a.m. called for all law enforcement and indicated that an officer’s firearm had been stolen.
Olivares then used the gun to steal keys to a vehicle at gunpoint and fled the scene in a 2008 blue Ford Escape, according to EPD. He was seen traveling south on 8thStreet in the stolen vehicle.
Scanner traffic indicated an ambulance was called to stage in the parking lot of the Uinta County Library to attend to an injured detention officer.
Law enforcement attempted to locate Olivares, with scanner traffic noting a search of a business on Allegiance Circle. Utah Highway Patrol units were notified to be on the lookout in case Olivares attempted to flee to Utah.
Olivares was able to elude law enforcement for approximately 30 minutes until the stolen vehicle was spotted by an alert fire department unit near the intersection of 6thand Front streets and followed until officers caught up to the suspect. A brief vehicle pursuit occurred before Olivares was apprehended and taken into custody.

According to Heraldrecords, Olivares has a long record of arrests. His name has appeared in police and sheriff’s logs with arrests including possessing stolen property, driving while under suspension, criminal trespassing, domestic battery, possessing a controlled substance, protection order violation and probation violations.
