Lyman to take on Lovell

Posted

The Lyman High School football team’s youth has shown so far this season, and the Eagles have had some bad luck with injuries through the first three games of the year.

But head coach Dale Anderson believes the team has the capability to put some more tallies in the win column this season.

“We feel like the potential is there, we just haven’t quite reached it yet,” Anderson said in a phone interview Wednesday night. “I think we’re heading in a pretty good direction right now.”

The Eagles (1-2) will look to bounce back from a 35-6 loss to Cokeville last week when Lyman travels to Lovell (1-2) to take on the Bulldogs today at 7 p.m.

“They’ve got some really big kids,” Anderson said. “We’re not the biggest team in the world, and we’re not the fastest team in the world, but we’re hoping we can be a little quicker and use that versus their size. It’s always tough when you go up against those teams that out-weigh you 15 to 20 pounds per guy.”

Lyman opened the season with a 47-6 loss to Pinedale, before edging Kemmerer, 8-6, in Week 2. Lovell is coming off a 31-0 loss to Mountain View.

The Bulldogs had their lone victory of the season in Week 2 when they rolled to a 39-0 win over Shoshoni. Lovell lost a tight season opener, falling to Newcastle, 22-20.

“Every week we try to add some new wrinkles for a new team we’re playing and just try to tweak some things a little,” Anderson said. “It’s always a work in progress as the week goes, but it’s been a solid week leading up (to Week 4).”

The Eagles are averaging 111 of rushing offense and 20 yards through the air. Their defense is allowing 327 yards per game.

Beaudee Bluemel leads the offense for Lyman with 218 total yards rushing on 55 carries with one touchdown. First-year starting quarterback Hagen Lamoreaux has run for 75 yards on the year on 27 carries. The sophomore is 3-of-7 through the air for 14 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Lovell is averaging 235 yards rushing and 20 yards passing. Nichols Porter has done most of the damage on offense for the Bulldogs, averaging 124 yards per game on 53 carries with four touchdowns.

Matt Savage and Logan Hitz have split time at quarterback for Lovell. Combined they have gone 12 of 23 for 60 yards.

Defensively the Bulldogs are allowing 257 yards per game.

“In our last couple games, our defense has played pretty well,” Anderson said. “We’ve struggled a little bit getting our offense on track, but our defense has done well and we’ve had some big plays out of our special teams. They’ve scored in the last two games. When your offense is struggling, it’s nice to have that aspect.”
