Lyman holds off Lovell

LOVELL – Lyman head football coach Dale Anderson said last week he believes his team has the potential to improve throughout the season.

He also said, the young Eagles team will rely heavily on its veteran offensive and defensive line.

Both statements were true following Lyman’s 12-0 win on Friday against Lovell in a Class 2A West Conference matchup at Lovell.

“I thought our interior linemen, our offensive and defensive linemen, really had a good game – from the stand point of slowing down their running game, and allowing us to run the ball,” Anderson said in a phone interview Saturday. “We were really happy with the way those guys played.”

Lyman also had the luxury of running back Beaudee Bluemell, who took full advantage of his offensive line by scoring both touchdowns for the Eagles (2-2, 2-1 2A West).

Bluemell ran for 240 yards on 39 carries on Friday. He scored his first touchdown with just over three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Bluemell added some insurance two minutes later when he found the end zone for the second time.

Coming in to Friday’s contest, Bluemell had ran for 218 yards on 55 carries through the first three games of the season.

“He was huge,” Anderson said. “He had a really good game running the ball. Part of the credit goes to the lineman for opening the holes that he ran through, but he ran really hard. We rode him pretty hard, but it was an important game for us and we had to win. He stepped up to the challenge, for sure.”

Defensively, the Eagles also upped their game.

Through its first three contests, Lyman had been outscored 88-20 by opponents. Opponents were also averaging 327 yards of total offense.

“They are getting better every week,” Anderson said. “We had really good play out of our defensive line and our linebackers made some good plays. Our defensive backs are a little inexperienced, but when they needed to make plays, they stepped up.

“It was a really good team effort. I thought we tackled well. That is something we had been struggling with a lot lately, but I thought we tackled well and played our responsibilities well. Defensively, it is vital they do what they’re supposed to do.”

Lyman will host the Star Valley junior varsity team on Thursday.

“We’re starting to figure some things out,” Anderson said. “As coaches, we’re figuring out strengths and weaknesses of kids. We’re still in that process, but I think it was definitely a win that will point us in the right direction. I thought we became a better team (Friday).”
