Lots on the line for Lyman in game against Greybull

Posted

LYMAN — The Lyman High School football team knows what is at stake going into Saturday’s 2 p.m. home matchup against Greybull.

A win puts the Eagles (3-3, 2-2 2A West) in a good position to make the playoffs. A loss against the Buffaloes (3-3, 2-2) could make Lyman’s chance at making the playoffs a little more difficult.

“To a degree it is a must win,” Lyman coach Dale Anderson said. “There are still some scenarios that could play out that could impact that. It’s a win that is pretty vital going forward. Next week’s is going to be as well.”

The Eagles close out the regular season against Big Piney (5-1, 4-1), ranked third in the state.

Mountain View (5-1, 4-0) leads the 2A West and Piney is second. Greybull, Lyman, Pindedale (2-4, 2-3), Lovell (2-4, 1-3) and Kemmerer (1-5, 0-4) round out the conference.

“Everybody knows it’s a game we have to win,” Dryden Menck said. “It’s a big game for us. Everybody has a good attitude about it. Everybody believes we can win the ballgame.”

Lyman is coming off a 42-0 loss against Mountain View. The Eagles have since dropped out of the Class 2A rankings after being ranked fifth last week.

The Eagles have put that game behind them.

“I think everybody trashed that game and got it out of their mind,” Menck said. “We’re ready to play this week”

Greybull is also looking for a bounce-back win after falling to Lovell, 33-18 last week.

Buffaloes quarterback Riley Hill leads Class 2A teams in passing after going 78 of 141 for 1,095 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Miguel Gomez is also the state’s leading receiver with 23 receptions for 447 yards and five touchdowns.

Brayan Castro leads the ground attack for Greybull with 434 yards rushing on 81 carries with 16 touchdowns.

“(Hill) does a lot of everything,” Anderson said. “He runs well, he throws well. They’ve got a couple of really good receivers and running backs as well. They’re pretty balanced with their running and passing game. They are a solid team, top to bottom.”

Greybull is ranked eighth in team offense in Class 2A with 270 yards per game. The Buffaloes are ninth in team defense, allowing 293.8 yards. Lyman is 13th in team offense (148 yards) and sixth in team defense (272.8 yards).

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Beaudee Bluemel said. “It’s going to be a close game, but I believe we can pull out a win.”

NOTE: This week’s game was originally scheduled for Friday, but has been moved to 2 p.m. Saturday in Lyman after Yeraldin Payano, a volleyball player at Greybull, died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained in a rollover car crash on Saturday near Greybull. Rachel Yenny, Payano’s stepmother, died from her injuries Saturday. Lyman will be collecting donations during Saturday’s game to support the family.
