EVANSTON — The Evanston Soroptimists held their monthly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17, at Main Street Deli. The December meeting is always a special one, as the group recognizes recipients of the Live Your Dream scholarships.
According to awards chair Bailey Snyder, Soroptimist “means best for women and girls,” and the Soroptimist program aims to better the lives of women in the community. Local Soroptimists have been awarding the Live Your Dream scholarships to help women pursue secondary education to better their lives and those of their families since 2013. The local chapter has awarded 17 women scholarships totaling $11,500 to date.
In 2019, Soroptimist International provided 1,770 scholarship awards in 21 countries, totaling $2.8 million. It reports that 85% of these women have completed their education and improved their standard of living.
“The Soroptimists of Evanston were pleased to award two scholarships this year to very deserving women — Nicole Espy and Kayla Steward-Spores,” Snyder siad. “At the award dinner, attendees also heard from three previous recipients about how the scholarship has helped them to excel in their educational and career goals.
Soroptimists also hosted three young ladies from YAHA to celebrate women who have overcome many obstacles and tough times. “They are proof that you can do anything you put your mind to,” said Snyder.
