Local Democrats sponsor gun raffle, seek improved visibility

Posted

EVANSTON — The Uinta County Democrats have spent recent months working on numerous projects to improve the organization’s visibility in the community and publicize its positions.

To emphasize support for responsible gun ownership and hunting, local Democrats have been selling tickets for a Ruger American 30-06 hunting rifle for the last several months.

The winning ticket was drawn Tuesday, and Lyman woman Mona Larsen was the winner. Larsen claimed her prize the next day.

Since spring, local party members from both Evanston and the Bridger Valley have sponsored an Earth Day poster and essay contest for school kids, organized a litter clean-up at the Evanston skate park, hosted an ice cream social in Mountain View, had entries in parades, attended union meetings and picnics, purchased a brick for the Evanston Splash Pad, and officials said they have seen lots of new faces at monthly leadership meetings.

The Uinta County Democrats will host a social event from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Bear River Pavilion in conjunction with the Wyoming Democratic Party fall meeting.

The highlight of the weekend will be the annual Roosevelt-Kennedy dinner, featuring keynote speaker Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Evanston Roundhouse. Tickets for the dinner are available on the WDP website at wyodems.org.

The Uinta County Democrats meet on the last Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m., with meetings alternating between Evanston and Mountain View.

Officials said the local party is actively working on candidate recruitment for the 2018 elections and promoting policies that help Wyoming families, with emphasis on ensuring public land access, affordable and accessible healthcare, and complete and adequately-funded public education.

Given the current well-publicized budget problems in Wyoming, party leadership said they are also focusing on fiscal responsibility and fairness, including breaking free from boom-and-bust economic cycles that are damaging to Wyoming families, businesses, and local governments and schools.

Anyone interested in becoming more involved with the Uinta County Democrats can follow the organization’s Facebook page, attend a monthly leadership meeting, or attend upcoming events.
