Lady Red Devils place second in Cokeville Invite tournament

Posted

The Lady Red Devils took to the court this past week, playing the Rich Rebels, the Alta Hawks and Green River at the Cokeville Invite Championship.

The invite started rough for the Lady Red Devils and they found themselves two sets behind the Rich Rebels but they did not roll over. With excellent serving and superb defensive plays by Anjahonna Archuleta along with excellent play by Hailey Barker and Emmery Wagstaff, Evanston mounted a comeback against the Rebels and won three set sin a row to win the match 3-2.

The Lady Red Devils met the Rebels again the next day and worked hard to end the match quickly. The Lady Red Devils defeated the Rebels in straight sets, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-9 to advance to the gold semifinals against the Alta Hawks.

Evanston took the court against Alta, a tough opponent. Alta took the first two sets, 25-11 and 25-19. Evanston battled back in the third set, defeating the Hawks 25-22 and then forced a fifth set when they won the fourth set 25-14. It wasn’t an easy set, though. Alta was behind 24-9 and attempted a comeback. Evanston had seven set points before they closed the set 25-14.

Alta took an early lead in the fifth set but the Lady Red Devils tied the game at nine and then Hannah Ellingford served and a block by the Lady Red Devils took the lead momentarily. A cross court kill by Archuletta put Evanston in the lead 11-10 and then extended their lead to 12-10.

Alta came back and tied the game at 12; that’s when Evanston took a timeout to discuss their strategy. Alta quickly scored after the timeout and then Alta scored again and had a set point. Evanston scored and then after a long volley, a save by Anderson tied the set at 14. Wagstaff scored a cross court kill and Evanston took a 15-14 lead over Alta.

It wasn’t over yet Alta tied the game up at 15 and Alta had the serve. Evanston took the lead again after a shot by Alyssa Dean, who then served for the Lady Red Devils and put Alta away 17-15 after Alta had a bad return and the Red Devils moved on to the championship.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday the Lady Red Devils faced Green River for the Cokeville Invite Championship match.

The Lady Red Devils played well against Green River and forced the match to five sets but Green River defeated Evanston in the fifth set 15-10 and the Lady Red Devils ended the tournament in second place.

On Saturday Evanston will play volleyball in Pocatello, Idaho.
