Lady Red Devils perfect on season

Evanston goes 3-0 in Casper Invitational

CASPER — The Evanston High School girls’ basketball team might not have received any votes in the Class 4A preseason poll, but the Lady Red Devils probably turned some heads this weekend at the Casper Invitational.

Evanston went 3-0 and Emmery Wagstaff scored 82 points at the event.

Just days after signing a national letter of intent to play basketball at Utah State University Eastern, Wagstaff opened the 2017-18 season with a 30-point performance to lead the Lady Red Devils to a 62-58 win against Laramie on Thursday in the first round of the Casper Invitational.

Wagstaff, a two-time All-State player, was 8 of 22 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line to lift Evanston past Laramie, the No. 4 team in Class 4A preseason rankings.

Evanston did not receive any votes in the poll after compiling a 12-15 record last season.

Hailey Barker poured in 17 points to help lead the attack for Evanston. The senior guard was 10 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Kori Deru chipped in with seven points and senior Megan Fisher added six points to help lead Evanston.

On Friday, Evanston claimed a 39-31 victory over Sheridan, which did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter, in the second round of the Casper Invitational.

On Saturday, Wagstaff put up a game-high 19 points, while Megan Fisher added 17 and Tayler Groll chipped in seven to lead the Lady Red Devils to a 52-26 win against Riverton at the Casper Invitational.

The Red Devils are back in action Thursday for the first round of the Flaming Gorge Classic.
